Have you ever considered using Google Adwords or another pay per click (PPC) provider to grow your home based business?  You should at least consider it.  There are several reasons for your business to use Adwords, including the most obvious reason, which is to increase sales of your products or services.  You can also use pay per click marketing to research your market with a survey, to quickly and inexpensively test a marketing campaign, or to build your email list.  But, your path to using Adwords could be an expensive slippery slope if it is not done right.  I think I have found a resource that will help keep your costs low and reduce your risk to a minimum.

One of the world’s foremost experts on Google Adwords pay per click advertising and marketing is Perry Marshall.  The 3rd Edition of his book “The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords…How to Access 100 Million People in 10 minutes” is a real treasure chest of tips on how to do a successful Google Adwords Campaign.  I bought the 2nd Edition of the book some time ago and loved it.

I promised Perry last year that I would post my opinion about the 3rd Edition review copy he gave me.  My review is overdue, so I’ll get right to it.  Here it is:

When I read a non-fiction book, especially one about small business, making money, or marketing, I bend the top corner of pages to bookmark those that contain important thoughts or facts. Some people call that process “dog-earing” the page.  You can judge how good I think a book is by counting how many dog-eared pages it has after I read it.  I think Perry’s book is one of the most dog-eared books I have ever read, with bent page corners on over one fifth of the book, 73 out of 341 pages.  So, I guess you know I liked the book.

The 3rd Edition contains all of the valuable 2nd Edition information, but is also about 30% different than the 2nd Edition.  The new material in the 3rd Edition includes tips on using social media, customer testimonials, and local place pages.  There are two new chapters on the “dark side of Google” that tells you what could go wrong with your Adwords campaign and what to do about it.  And, another cool new chapter alerts you to “17 things yo mama never told you about Google”.  In addition, the book contains lots of tips on effective advertising and marketing in general, not just on PPC marketing.

The only negative comment I can make about this book it that it has so much good information in it.  You may have a hard time absorbing everything and putting it all into practice.  Still, if you apply just one or two tips from the book, it will be worth your time and money.  To be honest, I haven’t applied very much of what I learned in the book yet.  Though I have experimented successfully with Adwords to build my email list, my business doesn’t yet need pay per click marketing.  I do expect to use Perry’s book to expand my use of Google Adwords and other PPC providers in the future to continue building my list, to test my marketing campaigns, to survey my market, and to sell more products.

If you ever plan on doing any pay per click marketing, you can get your own copy of “The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords” at Amazon.com.   Just be sure to buy the 3rd Edition as the 2nd Edition is still available at Amazon.  If you want to know more about Perry Marshall, you can check him out here:  Intro to Perry Marshall

Are you using press releases now as part of your campaign to promote your home based business website or blog?

If not, today is the day to start writing and sending news releases.

I gave you 33 newsy reasons to write a press release in my recent post at:

“33 Reasons to Write a News Release”

But, I didn’t tell you how to write your press releases. So, here’s the rest of the story:

All about the NEWS

When you write your press releases you will use a different style than the one you use in writing typical articles or blog posts.

The purpose of a press release is to share news, not to inform or educate your readers.

The folks at prlog.org, a press release distribution website, say, “A press release is simply a statement prepared for distribution to the news media announcing something claimed as having news value with the intent of gaining media coverage.”

As you learned in my “33 Reasons to Write a News Release” post, the news you announce in your press release doesn’t have to be earth shaking.  But, it does have to be newsy and of interest to the press release editors and the public.  More dramatic news, though, will get more attention. Your press release announcing such dramatic news is more likely to be published or will get a broader distribution.

How to Write a Press Release?

So, how do you write a press release? If you do it right, you can get additional traffic to your home business website or blog, more back links to your site, and, hopefully, more sales of your product or service.

First, a few general tips:

–Write your news release in the 3rd Person.  That is, don’t use I, We, Our in the 1st Person.  Use Them, They,Their. For example, don’t say “Superdooper Company Announces Our New Website”.  Instead, say “Superdooper Company Announces Their New Website”.

–Try to think like a journalist.  How do journalists write news? How do they like to see news presented to them?  They don’t want hype or blatant self promotion or product promotion.  They want unbiased news that answers the five questions: who, what, when, where, and why.

The Elements of a Successful News Release

A press release consists of following five elements:

1. The Headline

The headline is the first single line of text that the editor or reader sees.  It announces what the press release is about. It can not only be a effective tool to grab the attention of journalists and the public, but it can also help your news release be found by the search engines if it contains your most important key words.  As mentioned above, write the headline from a journalists perspective. What headlines catch your attention in the newspaper or in magazines?

The headline should be descriptive but not too long. A good goal is 100 characters or less.  Some press release distribution firms limit the headline length to a maximum of 100 characters. Every word in the headline should have the first letter capitalized, with the rest of the letters in lowercase. Include your applicable key words in the headline, and also in the body copy discussed below.

2. The Summary

The summary comes right after the headline and gives you another chance to convince a journalist to publish your release. A brief summary is generally required by online press release services. The summary should incorporate the most important content of your press release, perhaps a unique feature about your product or service.

The summary should be written in standard sentence structure.  That is, only the first letter of each sentence should be capitalized. All other words, except for acronyms and proper nouns, should be in lower case. The summary should be a paragraph of about two or three sentences long, with an upper limit of about 250 characters.

3. The Body

The body of a press release provides the answers to “who, what, when, where and why”. It typically includes three components: a dateline, an introduction, and the details of the release.  All three can be included in the first paragraph of the release.  Some press release distribution companies will not publish your release unless the body copy contains at least 300 words.  So, try to keep the body copy well above that lower limit, say 500 words if possible. The body should have a minimum of two paragraphs. Put as much as you can of the most important information in your release into the first paragraph without making the paragraph too long.

The three components of the body copy are:

Dateline

The dateline contains the release date of the press release and usually also the originating city of the press release. Some online press release services like PRLog.org automatically include the date stamp so you should not add it.

Introduction

The introduction starts the press release body. The introduction is in the first paragraph of the press release, right after the dateline.  It usually gives basic answers to the questions of who, what, when, where and why.  You should sprinkle appropriate key words throughout the introduction and the following details if the key words would occur there naturally. Avoid being overly aggressive with keyword placement. This “keyword stuffing” would be a negative mark against you by the search engines. If the press release distribution service allows it, try to have a hyperlink to your website or blog in the introduction, and/or later in the “About” section.

Details

The details follow immediately after the introduction, sometimes in the same paragraph, and sometimes in a second or third paragraph. The details provide further explanation, facts, background information, or other information relevant to the news that also supports whatever claims were made in the introduction.

4. The About Section

The about section is referred to as the “boilerplate” because it used at the end of every press release you write. It is a short section that provides background information on your company or organization, or on other companies related to your release.

5. The Media Contact Information Section

This section contains your contact information: your name, phone number, email address, mailing address, etc if you are the person you want the media to contact. If there is someone else you want them to contact regarding the press release, provide their name and other contact information. However, to be fully credible, the contact person’s email address should be the same as the organization the press release is about. For example, if the press release is about your company with a website called superdooper.com, then the email address should be email_address@superdooper.com.

If you are ready to see your news release campaign accelerate into high gear, and you are up for spending a little money on the process, you should try the “Press Release Fire” product (currently priced at $19.95).  It offers a step-by-step blueprint for writing your news releases and getting them published.  See for yourself here:

If you are not in that much of a hurry and you want to spend more time and do all the research yourself, here are two places to learn more about writing a press release:

The following site won’t tell you exactly how to write your release, but, it gives you a text box for every important component of a press release so you can create your press release by just filling in the blanks.  It then formats the press release so you can copy it and send it.

The website below offers a summary of how to write a press release, but it is very similar to my post above. It will be more useful for you to review some of their published press releases so you get a good feeling for how a release should be written.  You can do that at the following link:
